For thousands of years, cultures around the world have believed that a person’s energy is contagious —once you come in contact with someone else’s vibes, good or bad, they tend to linger for a while.
If you’ve ever just felt “off” after coming in contact with someone, especially if they’ve come into your space, the best way to rid your space of any negativity you’ve inadvertently tracked home is through a cleansing ritual called smudging.
Even if you’re unfamiliar with the ancient practice, you’ve probably seen smudge sticks— they’re bundles of fat leafy herbs wrapped in ribbon, string, or twine & can be paired with flowers and other herbs. Different herbs and flowers are used for different intentions and manifestations, but sage is known to have the power to shift energy into a calmer, happier state.
Not only is sage good to clear bad energy, but it also helps to cleanse the air of any bad bacteria. Research shows it absorbs up to 94% air airborne bacteria. In addition to its cleansing abilities, it helps to connect you to the spirit world. So as your meditating, manifesting, connecting with your ancestors or preparing for a ritual or ceremony, be sure smudging is a part of it!
Now, the question everyone is asking. Is this whole sage thing a fad? Honestly, we won’t deny the fact that it definitely seems like one for some people. However, the power of social media gives us all immediate access to do research and to learn from each other. Especially given the fact that we (millennials) are starting to stray away from a lot of what we were conditioned to believe growing up. That said, buying a bundle of sage won’t solve all of your problems because free will comes into play and there’s life lessons to be learned, but we wholeheartedly believe that before taking part in any spiritual activity, research needs to be done. Simply put, it’s all about intent.
Lastly, smudging is not considered witch craft (or hoodoo/voodoo), although it is often used for many things associated with it. You don’t need to be a witch to protect your space and energy. Even if it were, not all witches are bad, but that’s another blog for another time. Again, it’s all about intent. & to give you something to think about, sage is to “us” what bread and wine is to other religions.
